The small Central American country of El Salvador has embraced a new denomination of origin, known as ‘Cafe Alotepec’. Announced in late May 2017, this denomination will act as a means of identifying coffees that come from the Alotepec region in Chalatenango, a well-known coffee growing region in El Salvador. May 2017 After our Best of El Salvador Auction in April the Project Origin team had a chance to get closer to and better understand what’s happening in Central America right now. For Nicaragua an early harvest in combination with a late timing of our auction meant we’ve had to cancel our Best of Nicaragua Auction event. The ‘Project Origin: Best of’ auction series aims to connect coffee producers and buyers worldwide, at origin. But how do they work? First, producers submit their coffees, in several categories. This changes depending on the country hosting the auction. Then, a National Jury in the host country judges and selects any coffee scoring above 85 and above. This can result in any number of coffees being shortlisted. Samples of these coffees are then made available worldwide, through our Cropster hub.
